The IAS invites you to join us for the launch of the IAS Time Theme.
Spacetime and Chronotope – How Disciplines Conceptualise Time. A Trialogue, a virtual forum bringing three IAS Visiting Fellows into a ‘trialogue’ on how we conceptualise, and use, time.
This online workshop marks the launch of the IAS Annual Theme on Time and examines how different scholarly disciplines conceptualise what time is about: while the natural sciences hold that time is objectively measurable, fundamental and independent of any social context, the humanities and social sciences are more interested in how time is socially and culturally constructed, as well as subjectively experienced. It is therefore essential to enter into a dialogue of what we understand by time, and how different philosophies of time affect social and cultural change.
The Fellows joining for the event are:
Professor Laurence Eaves, School of Physics and Astronomy, University of Nottingham
Professor Meghan Sullivan, Department of Philosophy and Director of the Institute for Advanced Study, University of Notre Dame
Dr Jutta Vinzent, Department of Art History, University of Birmingham and University of Erfurt
