Project details
Background: Tackling engineering skills shortages is the most important business imperative work on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) for the future of engineering identified by the Royal Academy of Engineering, with large gaps in graduates required by industry.
With the Royal Academy of Engineering, Professional Engineering Institutions, Charities and Global Engineering Companies recognising these issues, many initiatives have begun to deliver greater recognition of challenges surrounding under-representation.
The Belonging Built-In Engineering Project ambitiously aims to develop the culture of belonging and improve inclusion in engineering for diverse under-represented groups. Improving inclusion can increase performance, growth, and innovation, and improve health, safety, and wellbeing across engineering disciplines and engineered products.
Presently, there is only one Society for under-represented engineers embedded across Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and industry nationally: the Women’s Engineering Society (WES). WES at ҹɫֱapp is one of the strongest groups in the UK and has received underpinning post-covid support from supervisor Dr Elizabeth Ratcliffe and ҹɫֱapp’s Inclusive Engineering Excellence Hub (IEEH, funded by the Royal Academy of Engineering) to drive a dynamic programme of activities for undergraduate and postgraduate national and international students.
This Interdisciplinary PhD applying Social Sciences to Engineering Education, aims to embed nationally recognised Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) organisations into Higher Education engineering, representing the wider diversity of under-represented engineers and wider society to which engineering industry serves. The partner organisations represent wide ranging and intersectional EDI aspects and like WES, their mission values are to foster greater inclusion in engineering through connecting, informing, and empowering the under-represented groups they work with.
The PhD will take a data driven approach towards embedding inclusivity in engineering, by expanding a programme of student-led societies and industry-focused inclusion activities and evaluating their impact for students to feel a sense of belonging through their respective societies from their engineering degree and beyond into their career.
The ҹɫֱapp Vice Chancellors ҹɫֱapp Cluster in Inclusive Engineering is led by Dr Elizabeth Ratcliffe and aims to develop Future Leaders in Inclusive Engineering; where engineered products and services are accessible, inclusive and free from discrimination and bias for more ethical, sustainable, risk-free engineering.
The successful candidate will join a team of six doctoral researchers working on Inclusive Engineering projects that aim to deliver change in how we develop inclusive engineering products and services across a wide range of engineering disciplines and Higher Education. Working collaboratively with the industrial partners and wider networks developed through our Inclusive Engineering Excellence Hub that is funded by the Royal Academy of Engineering and gaining widespread recognition for its important work in this space.
Applications are invited from prospective students with relevant experience to the above project or generally in the following areas:
- Social sciences & Sociology
- Data Analysis
- Engineering
ҹɫֱapp proposals relating to the project are encouraged in which applicants could describe (i) how they would initially approach the research; or (ii) how their relevant experience is applicable to the project.
94% of ҹɫֱapp’s research impact is rated world-leading or internationally excellent. REF 2021

Fully funded Full-time degree per annum
Fees for the 2024-25 academic year apply to projects starting in October 2024, January 2025, April 2025 and July 2025.
Tuition fees cover the cost of your teaching, assessment and operating University facilities such as the library, IT equipment and other support services. University fees and charges can be paid in advance and there are several methods of payment, including online payments and payment by instalment. Fees are reviewed annually and are likely to increase to take into account inflationary pressures.
The studentship is for 3 years full time or 6 years part time and provides a tax-free stipend of £19,237 per annum (full time) for the duration of the studentship plus university tuition fees.
